Trial copies

Trying a copy we host

A trial copy is a Millo we run for you, free, so you can try it on real jobs before anyone spends anything. This page is the agreement that goes with it.

Draft for review. This agreement isn't in effect yet.

Who this is between

Millo is made by a business in Ontario, Canada ("we", "us"). This agreement is between us and the company trying the copy ("you"). It covers the trial only. Buying Millo is covered by the terms of sale.

What you get

  • A Millo of your own, at its own address, with your company in it and nobody else's.
  • Every part of Millo, working, for as long as the trial runs.
  • A card with your sign-in and a setup code for each device.
  • A Report a bug button on every screen that comes straight to us.

It costs nothing, and nothing is owed at the end. There's no card to enter, no trial that turns into a subscription, and no sales calls. We'll ask once how it went. If you'd rather not say, that's the end of it.

Where it runs, and who can reach it

Your copy runs on a computer we own and keep running, not on yours. It's reached over the internet at its own address, and each device is set up once with a code from your card, so nobody without a code gets in.

Because the computer is ours, we can reach what's in your copy. We use that to keep it running, to put it back if it breaks, and to look at something you've reported. We don't read your jobs or your numbers for any other reason, we never show them to anyone else, and we never sell anything to anyone.

Your records stay yours

Everything you put in — your crew, your jobs, your budgets, your invoices, your files — is yours. Trying Millo gives us no claim to any of it.

Ask us at any time and we'll hand you the backup folder from your copy. If you buy Millo, that folder restores onto your own computer and your trial work carries on where it left off.

What the copy records about how you use it

A trial copy keeps four things a bought copy never does, so we can see where Millo trips people up:

  • which screens you open, and how long you stay on each one
  • the words on the buttons you press
  • where on the screen you press, including spots that do nothing
  • anything you send us with the Report a bug button

It never keeps what you type into Millo, and any figure in a button's words is replaced with a # before it's written down, so "Invoice 1854" is kept as "Invoice #". A screen is kept as the kind of screen it is, not which job you opened. The only words of yours we keep are the ones you choose to type into Report a bug.

None of it is sent anywhere else. There are no trackers, no analytics service and no advertising in Millo, in a trial copy or a bought one.

Your crew

If you add your crew, their names and hours sit in your copy, on our computer. Tell them the copy is a trial we host: they should know where their hours are. You decide what goes in; we hold it for you and do nothing else with it. Our privacy policy says how we handle personal information.

Millo isn't finished

You're trying software that's still being built. It can have bugs, a screen can change between one week and the next, and something you rely on today can work differently tomorrow. Keep doing your billing and payroll the way you do now, alongside the trial, until you've decided Millo is ready for your company. Don't make a trial copy the only place something important is written down.

A trial copy is provided as it is, with no warranty. We'll fix what we can, as fast as we can, but we can't promise it will be there when you need it or that nothing will be lost. If something goes wrong, what we owe you is limited to what you paid for the trial, which is nothing. Nothing here takes away rights a law gives you that an agreement can't remove.

What we ask of you

  • Use it for your company's own work. Don't resell it, rent it out or hand it to another company.
  • Don't take Millo apart to build something like it.
  • Tell us when something breaks or you can't find something. That's the whole point of the trial.
  • Keep your sign-in and your setup codes to the people in your company who need them.

You're free to say what you like about Millo, to anyone, good or bad. There's nothing to sign, and no permission needed.

How it ends

Either of us can end the trial at any time, for any reason. We'll tell you first, and give you the backup folder from your copy.

After it ends we keep your copy for a short while so nothing is lost by mistake, and delete its records within 90 days, as the privacy policy says. Ask us to delete them sooner and we will.

The rest of it

This agreement is governed by the laws of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, and any dispute about it goes to the courts of Ontario. If a court decides part of it can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
